If the software product from Redmond, Washington is a bit too pricey. Then, it may be time to consider competitive products. In this case, I found LucidChart to be an interesting product. There are "free" and three steps of "paid" service available.
If you like MindNode or flow charts, there are some really nifty templates and a bunches of icons and/or imagery available. Attached is a sample that I clicked through on my first dray-and-drop attempt to use the product.
It appears to be useful for teachers and for individuals doing investigative work.

Another great alternative is Creately diagram tool. The interface it much easier to use and it has many flowchart templates etc to start drawing diagrams quickly.
